About me

Sonja Sequoia NPI am an ecologist from Austria with a background in biogeochemistry and ecosystem research. At the moment I am doing my PhD thesis at the Institute of Soil Research at BOKU University Vienna, Austria. My work focuses on the cycling of carbon and nitrogen in soil, and how soil processes are affected by severe drought and heavy rainfall.

I feel at home outdoors: I have done research projects in Austrian forests, a California grassland, rain forests in Costa Rica, and taiga and tundra ecosystems in Central Siberia. I have walked over Iceland’s vulcanoes and surfed along the coast of Brazil, Portugal and Spain. And I’m curious about my next adventure that’s taking me to Nairobi, Kenya, to investigate the environmental footprint of livestock farming systems!
